1. Effective learning is supported when students are actively engaged in the learning process.

"Analysis of the research literature ... suggests that students must do more than just listen: They must read, write, discuss, or be engaged in solving problems. Most important, to be actively involved, students must engage in higher-order thinking tasks as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation."

Bonwell, C. & Eison, J. 1991, Active Learning: Creating Excitement in the Classroom, ERIC Clearinghouse on Higher Education, Washington DC, viewed 20 June 2007, URL: http://www.ericfacility.net/ericdigests/ed340272.html

"Learning is not a spectator sport. Students do not learn much just by sitting in classes listening to teachers, memorizing pre-packaged assignments, and spitting out answers. They must talk about what they are learning, write about it, relate it to past experiences and apply it to their daily lives. They must make what they learn part of themselves."
